Christian Elephants” Attack Persecutors in India
(Article is from Asia Harvest Newsletter December 2009)

In 2008, a severe persecution of Christians broke out in the Indian state of Orissa. The end result saw more than 500 Christians murdered, and thousands of others injured and homeless after their houses were reduced to ashes. As a result, Asia Harvest responded and helped the persecuted believers, including building homes for many families. Recently, a strange and dramatic event took place in Orissa, which has many people talking and wondering.
In recent months, herds of wild elephants have stormed villages that are home to some of the worst persecutors. In one village where in August a year ago the Christians had to run for their lives while their homes were being destroyed by rioters, a herd of elephants emerged from the surrounding jungle, the Restoration India Mission reported, “Exactly one year later, at the same time of the day, the persecutors had to run for their lives, from nothing less than a herd of wild elephants! These elephants first attacked a rock crusher machine owned by a key leader of the persecution movement. They then went on to destroy his house and farm. Gaining momentum, they rampaged through other non-Christian homes, demolishing gardens and singling out the homes of persecutors, leaving Christian homes untouched. People ran to the police station to report the disastrous news.
In one case, a police jeep that attempted to drive away the herd was attacked and the occupants barely escaped. Truly, God is the avenger of the helpless. These strange attacks have spread, and according to a newspaper report the elephants have already destroyed more than 700 houses in 30 villages, and killed five people.

Nobody in this area has seen or even imagined the unique appearance of a herd of wild elephants such as this. The elephants are not ordinary elephants; they appear to be on a mission. Typically, smaller elephants enter a village first, appearing to survey the community. They then rejoin the herd, and larger elephants soon follow and get the job done. “Just what is their job?” you might ask. We think that it might have something to do with avenging the blood of martyrs. In fact, the fear of God has fallen on the local people, who have labeled these elephants, ‘Christian elephants.’”
Holy Spirit's Presence - by bro. William Chow
God is awesome!
Our God is indeed an awesome God and I want to testify to that.
Yes, our Lord Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever and He is alive and is dwelling among His people. On Wednesday, 17 June my wife and I went to church to attend the night Prayer meeting. During the praise and worship, I felt the Holy Spirit came upon me. My body began shaking and I felt as if it’s burning with fire. Then I began to speak in tongues and all these lasted for quite some time (I cannot remember exactly how long). After that I felt so weak that I could hardly walk nor stand properly so I just fell on my knees and waited in the Lord’s presence. That was when I experienced His peace and joy in my heart and deep within my spirit I realized that God was strengthening me. It was such an awesome experience and I am so grateful to God for that special touch from Him.
I want to thank God for the indwelling of His Holy Spirit in me and I really long for the manifestation of His Holy Spirit in each and everyone of His children wherever we are especially at the church prayer meeting.
Glory be to God!
Visions during RLS Prayer Meeting
At our Wednesday night prayer meeting on 1 July, bro. Elijah shared a vision he received during the praise and worship. He saw a ladder coming down from heaven to the stage (Main Sanctuary) and it reminded him of the ladder that Jacob dreamt of (Gen. 28:12). Ministering angels were coming down the ladder to minister to each and everyone at the meeting.
Sis. Annie Wong also shared a similar vision of angels coming up and down a staircase. Truly, God was with us that night. Many at the prayer meeting felt the presence of the Lord strongly.
Answered Prayers & Mother-in-law's Walk with the LORD - By Lorna Chew - Feb 2009

Early last year I shared how my mother-in-law who worshiped “Kuan Yin” for 50 over years accepted Jesus into her life (February 2008). It was during the time she was recuperating from her surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in her rectum. At that time the doctor told us that at 4th stage cancer (diagnosed in December 2007), she had about 6-12 months to live.
About 2-3 months ago, my mother-in-law began to experience some nagging pain in her lower abdomen. Shortly after, staining and bleeding followed. A test showed a big mass in her uterus and x-ray revealed shadow on her lungs. The doctor did not doubt that the cancer had spread. She underwent surgery on the 12th December 2008 to remove her uterus and ovaries and due to some complications another surgery was done on the 17th. The surgeon said that her stomach and liver were covered with numerous tiny cancer tumors so much so her liver looked like a cauliflower. He was amazed that my mother-in-law who is 78 years old could still be alive. And because she is still alive with this serious condition, she should be experiencing excruciating pain. It has to be the grace and mercy of God that my mother-in-law did not experience such pain!
She told David Ten who visited her a couple of days before that, when she could not sleep, she would pray and then she could sleep. While lying on the hospital bed the right side of her chest was giving her pain for few days, she prayed and the pain left her.
After her discharge from the hospital, at home on Christmas evening, she was lying in bed asking the Lord to remove her abdominal pain (which she was having the whole day) that was worrying her and to stop the cough that was robbing her of her sleep. As she shut her eyes, she suddenly heard her intestines being pulled and felt a sharp pain. Three times it happened before she fell into a deep sleep without coughing. Till today the pain never came back.
During her stay in hospital, she communed with the Lord a bit and pondered over her life. She asked the Lord to give her the strength to overcome her “mah jong” and “empat ekor” addictions of 50 odd years. When her children were young, it was her habit to spend hours at the “mah-jong” table leaving her children to fend for themselves.
I knew my mother-in-law harboured lots of bitterness and unforgiveness and it took a few occasions to finally convince her to forgive from her heart. There were also other sensitive issues that I felt uncomfortable to point out to her but somehow our Lord Jesus would appear to her in a dream to tell her that she has sins in her life. This happened about 2-3 weeks before her recent operation. When she called and asked me to explain the dream, I grabbed the opportunity to tell her what the Lord wanted her to do – acknowledge, confess and repent. That Sunday, which was her second time at Sunday church service, she felt unwell after an hour and requested to be sent home. She vomited nothing except a little foam and air. My mother-in-law had deliverance without her knowledge, without anyone knowing what was going on and without any assistance. Surely it was God’s mighty hand at work!
God had so much pity and compassion on her despite her refusing to attend church (until recently), her stubbornness to hold on to bitterness and unforgiveness, her rudeness to a Christian who called to visit her, her pride, temper, being materialistic, self-centered, bad attitude, etc. Some months ago, my husband remarked that he would be surprised if she could qualify for heaven with that kind of character. Oh you don’t know her! God knows and yet….He remains patient, kind and faithful and was there when she called out to Him.
God has touched and changed my mother-in-law in such a way that no one could imagine. Like most typical Chinese people, “saving face” is a big issue. About 6 months ago she and her only daughter had an argument over the phone. This was among the numerous quarrels they have had but because there was some false accusation this time, she refused to ever forgive her. Even though in November she was convicted and forgave her daughter from her heart, knowing her character, she is unlikely to make the first phone call. On the evening of 31st December, the Lord used her 1st son to steer her towards her daughter. She prayed first for God to give her a sign for her to phone before she obeyed. Wow! Her phone call is evidence that she has forgiven her and she declared her stand not to bring up the past again. I am so proud of her because I know it is so difficult to “break” her character.
I want to praise God and thank Him not only for answering my prayers but also for the precious lessons learned through last year’s events especially with my mother-in-law. Among my prayers answered were:
- She personally would taste how real and good God is.
- Her salvation affirmed. (David Ten is witness for her salvation too.) My mother-in-law said she regretted accepting and knowing Jesus so late in life. We are unable to find a maid at short notice to keep her company and look after her but she assured us that she has Jesus. Nowadays, she would wake up in the morning with a “Good
morning, Jesus”.
- She would attend church (although she started only 3 Sundays before her surgery). She testified how loving the people are and how comfortable she is with them.
- God has blessed our relationship especially since she became a Christian. Now we have something in common to share – Jesus.
- God had so far sustained and kept her from extreme and prolonged pain.
After her recent surgery, the doctor told us that she is unlikely to live past 3 months. My mother-in-law is not so fearful of death now. The pain most cancer patients suffer during the last days is what she fears most. My last prayer request for her is that by His abundant grace and mercy she will miraculously escape the severe pain and let her pass away peacefully when her time is up. I request RLS to agree with me in prayer for her. Lastly, my heartfelt thanks to the church and intercessors for upholding all of us in prayer faithfully.
A Woman of God - From L.A.M.P. Ministry (Nov 2008)
Sis. Mary Kok, one of our members testified very excitedly about her grand-daughter who made a stand "to want to be like grandma" i.e. to become a Christian and to care and pray for others.
Sis. Mary is one who takes the Word of God very seriously. She not only meditate on the scriptures, she also memorizes them correctly word for word. She had been a great inspiration and encouragement to the ladies, young and old at our L.A.M.P. meetings.
She often shared about her hardship in life, having been a single parent who struggled to bring up many children. Nevertheless it was through those trying and difficult times that she experienced the reality and power of God in her life and she testified about God's faithfulness and loving grace upon her life.
Today, she is the biblical example of a matured woman of God who is full of confidence and able to advise, counsel and exhort the younger woman to become the strong women of God that they are destined to be.
Thank you Lord for Your faithfulness
After her morning round of sending her daughter and niece to school, sis. Doreen Cheah was having second thoughts about returning to her house to change her smaller car for the bigger NAZA which has already been loaded with items to be donated to Manna's Charity Bazaar. She had planned to deliver the items to the church after the Ladies- meeting. As she approached her house, she was surprised to see the main gate wide open. Walking up the porch she discovered that even the front door of the house was unlocked. She realized that it was her niece who had left the house without locking up.
Quickly she checked to see if there was an intruder and whether any items in the house had been stolen. Praise God, there was no loss. The Holy Spirit had prompted her to return home on time to prevent any attempts of burglary.
Baptism of the Holy Spirit - By Leong May Chan
My name is Leong May Chan and I am a lawyer. Early this year my friend Pwei Choo invited me to give a talk on how to write our wills, to her Ladies Group called LAMP. I agreed and that was how I came to attend this inter-d Ladies Fellowship. At that time I was quite a new Christian and undergoing criticism from my spouse for becoming a follower of Jesus Christ.
After the talk, Pwei Choo encouraged me to stay back so that Ps. Khim could pray for me. Somehow our conversation moved to the topic of the Holy Spirit baptism. Ps Khim explained it to me and though I said that I was not yet water-baptized, she assured me that God can fill me with the Holy Spirit if I ask for it. It was what I longed for and after some explanation from the Bible, Ps. Khim prayed for me. The Holy Spirit came upon me and a strange new language flowed easily from my lips. I felt so wonderful and joyful that God loved me and poured out His spirit upon me.
Since my Holy Spirit baptism, my eyes opened. I had difficulty reading my Bible before, often falling asleep halfway! But now, the Bible became alive to me and my understanding is opened. When my husband scolded me for coming to the LAMP meeting, I was able not to be angry or argumentative but kept quiet. He said I was becoming a fanatic for coming to the ladies- fellowship. To me that statement was a compliment. I always wanted to walk right with God. Instead of getting angry, I felt happy! I really have changed from being luke-warm to hungering after the things of God. To me that was an encouragement.
Praise God for loving me and filling
me with His Holy Spirit.
A Special Visitation from the Holy Spirit by Jan Lum (2007)
On Sept 11, 2007, I experienced a special touch from the Holy Spirit and He brought me an urgent message which I believe He wants me to share with others. The Holy Spirit led me into 2 wonderful sessions of worship and prayer. It was my first time experiencing such a tremendous presence of the Holy Spirit and this divine encounter has left me desiring, everyday to enter into the holy presence of God.
On Tuesday, Sept 11, I had this feeling that I needed to spend time alone with God. So upon returning from work at church, I quickly went to my room and started reading Isaiah 53. As I was reading it, suddenly tears rolled down my cheeks and I was weeping. When this happened, I knew that this was the work of the Holy Spirit. He touched my heart & helped me to understand in my spirit the pain and suffering that the Lord Jesus Christ went through for me in order to cleanse me of my sins. I cried and wept when I read Isaiah53: 5, "He was wounded for my transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities."
After this weeping and cleansing, the Holy Spirit led me to acknowledge that I was being in the presence of the Ancient of Days and I spent time in praise and worship. Most of the time I was praying in a new spiritual language which was different from my usual spiritual tongue. This was the first part of His visitation and after this I took a short rest.
When I woke up, the Holy Spirit led me again into a time of weeping and thanking the Lord Jesus Christ for His sacrificial love. This time, the Holy Spirit led me to pray for Malaysia - that the heavens above will open and His presence and Glory will come. I was led to pray especially for the salvation of the many people in this nation who do not have the liberty to choose their religion. I wept because they perish without hearing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Dear Christians, I felt that our Lord Jesus was telling me, "I have put one foot into Malaysia but are My people ready for My visitation?" During all this time, the Holy Spirit made my hands shake profusely, like it was a sign of urgency. I also uttered the words "fire, fire". I believe that there will be a time of cleansing and persecution even as the blessings of God are poured out on this land.
I feel that there is a tremendous need for us to invite the Lord Jesus Christ to come pour out His grace and righteousness to this nation Malaysia that many will recognise His Glory and acknowledge Him as Lord and Saviour. It will also be good for us to act upon what the word of God says:
If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked way, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place. 2 Chronicles 7:14,15
I thank God for this message from Him and I pray that we will all spend more time with Him to find out what plans He has for us so that we can live out the destiny that He has for everyone of us.
"Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb, forever and ever." Revelation 5:13
